Our Projects

At Sanctuary Farms, our philosophy is rooted in deep ecology, which views the natural world as an interconnected system where every element holds intrinsic value. Through this lens, we approach farming and gardening as an opportunity not only to cultivate the land but to repair and restore the relationships between people, the environment, and food. We view our work as an act of reparative justice, recognizing the historical inequities faced by marginalized communities, especially communities of color, and working to heal those harms by providing equitable access to sustainable food systems and green spaces.

We have therefore committed ourselves to being stewards of WASANA - Water, Air, Soil, Agriculture, and Nature Access - and to the communities that we serve. Without healthy land, we cannot have healthy people.

We are honored to be able to continue to ground our work in Detroit’s beautiful and resilient Riverbend neighborhood, which Sanctuary Farms calls home. Scroll below to learn more about our stewardship efforts!

  • Water

As part of the Water Consortium, we recently installed our first wabash on the farm.

  • Air

We installed an air quality monitor on our farm to track and improve local air conditions in our community.

  • Soil

Deeply connected with the Earth and soil, Sanctuary Farms is dedicated to creating quality compost from local food waste.

  • Agriculture

From our nutrient dense compost, we grow rich and vibrant produce that we sell and distribute across the community.

  • Nature Access

Sanctuary Farms transforms vacant land into thriving green spaces, providing Detroit communities with access to nature, fresh food, and a place to grow together.
