In 2019, Detroit recorded 855 children with elevated blood lead levels. Homes and the soils surrounding them across Detroit are contaminated with lead, the legacy of heavy industry and lead-based paint. In regards to urban gardening, the issue of lead contamination is a threat to the health and safety of farmers.
